Crossing the Line seems to have established a kind of rhizomatic presence, springing up at many venues, held together by organiser Jeff Hilson and a faithful core of listeners. This week we were downstairs at The Horse Hospital just around the corner from Russell Square tube. The reading was in part a celebration for Barry Schwabsky who is heading back to New York after some ten years in London. He performed work solo and in conjunction with Vincent Katz, over for four days or so. Katz performed his own work as well, initially in adverse conditions until the source of a transmitted broadcast was located, then later contending briefly with the ambient sound of his son’s screen game. Katz had copies of his terrific magazine Vanitas and Schwabsky some books including 12 abandoned poems, from Dunedin, New Zealand’s quality small press Kilmog.

The British Museum is currently hosting an Australian season, partly in conjunction with the Botanical Gardens at Kew. There is an exhibition of prints and drawings from Sidney Nolan to Rover Thomas and another of indigenous baskets and containers. I will be reading my work on Wednesday June 22nd at 1.15 pm in Room 90 where the prints are on display. Admission is free and all are welcome.

R E (&) M at Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s London campus occupies a building just off Trafalgar Square and once used as a City pied a terre by Oxford and Cambridge students. On Tuesday a seperately programmed Shearsman reading took place there, featuring Carrie Etter, Peter Robinson and John Matthias, visiting from the home campus. Shearman will be putting all of Matthias’s work back into print again, having started the process with the essay collection Who Was Cousin Alice? and other questions.

Last night’s Shearsman reading, the last regular event of the season, featured DS Marriott (above) reading from The Bloods; Frances Presley, who read four of Anne Blonstein’s poems in memoriam; and Robert Sheppard, reading from Berlin Bursts.
